Where the hospital loan figures come from
HUD's monthly insured-mortgage files, filtered to the rows HUD labels "MF Hospitals", and the Office of Hospital Facilities' own list of active loans.
HUD's insured multifamily mortgage files
HUD's Office of Housing posts an active and a terminated file of every FHA-insured multifamily mortgage on its Insured Multifamily Mortgages page, updated monthly after month-end close. The current files are dated September 30, 2026. We keep the 76 active and 417 terminated rows HUD labels "MF Hospitals". Each carries the loan's original amount, note rate, endorsement and maturity dates, term, program code, holder and servicer; active rows add the monthly payment and amortized balance; terminated rows add how and when the loan ended and whether HUD recorded it as a claim.
The "units" field on hospital rows appears to be licensed beds (Care New England's row shows 745; its lender's 2026 announcement cites 749 beds), but HUD doesn't label it, so we show it as "beds (HUD units field)".
The Office of Hospital Facilities' list
HUD's healthcare programs page links a list of all active FHA hospital loans with hospital and system names. Its FHA numbers match the active file exactly; we use its names to group a system's loans. Fifteen of its amounts differ from the active file's original amounts, likely initial against final endorsed amounts; we show the active file's.
What we compute
Totals, medians, the decade table and the claim counts are ours. HUD doesn't publish a claim rate for the program, and its files show original principal, not claim payments or recoveries.

Both lists behind this site, one row per FHA number, as of September 30, 2026. Small enough to open in a spreadsheet. The files and the figures on this page refresh in place when HUD posts a new month (our feed checks weekly), so the date here is always the date of the files you download.
